Does Your Name Actually Affect Who You Are?

Does your name actually affect who you are? I would say yes it does. Everyone's name has a background wether it's just that you're parents thought it sounded nice or that you were named specifically after someone. Maybe your name was carefully chosen by some cultural practice. As Americans, I sometimes believe we loose sight of the importance of names in other countries. Here we have a diverse group of people with equally unique sets of names, but in some places names can mean so much more. When we hear names some make us think a person is from a certain place. Where we are born shapes part of who we are. It helps us develop our traditions, values, and ideas of the world. So when you really think about it doesn't that mean our names account for part of who we are?

  1. I think that our names do shape who we are. Our names tend to match our personality and that's because we grow into our names and do what is expected from them.

  2. Where we are born may shape who we are, but not our names. Our names might indicate where we are from, but they are not actively responsible for where we grow up. So when you really think about it...our names don't account for who we are. Even so, it is unfair to assume that just because someone's name originates from a certain area they have the same traditions, values, and ideas of the world as everyone else from that area. Don't get me wrong, I do think that where you are from shapes who you are. Environment plays a huge role in the development of our personalities. But it happens differently for everyone, and in no way a name is some indicator of who we are.
